What to Ask at a Parent Teacher Conference

What Is My Child Learning?

Overview

The Common Core State Standards Initiative (CCSSI) is a state-led effort designed to improve educational outcomes for students by developing consistent, clear K-12 academic standards in English Language Arts and Mathematics. These standards have been adopted by more than 40 states, including Michigan.

The standards help ensure that students graduate high school with the knowledge and skills needed for success in college and career. The standards:

  • Align with college and workplace expectations

  • Are clear, understandable, and consistent

  • Include rigorous content and application of higher-order thinking skills

  • Build on strengths of current state standards

  • Are informed by top-performing countries

  • Are evidence-based
